The Horror Horoscope

Mercury is always in retrograde.

Matt and Richelle (of the Night Worms team) had a fun time with horror horoscopes and books. “We are not astrologers, although Matt did look at the Jupiter/Saturn convergence for a few minutes.”

Included among their calendar of sun sign choices was FLOATERS, in the apropos house of pisces. According to them:

Pisces are known to be the gentlest souls of the zodiac. True to their symbol, most of the Pisces individuals are found to enjoy water related sports and activities. Their list of hobbies involve reading, dancing, fishing, water sports, cooking, collecting furniture or dishware.

The Twenty Books Jay Recommended the Most This Year – 2020

I was pleasantly surprised to find myself on a year-end list of books. As a writer, reader, reviewer and occasional journalist, Jay has seen a lot of books, and these 20 in 2020 stuck with him.

I recommend a lot of books. Each month, I compile a list of the ten books I recommended most that month. This is very unscientific. I scan my Twitter, email, articles I’ve written, and other corners of the Internet to sort my book recommendations into a countdown. People love lists and countdowns…

Regarding #19 (me) Jay said of WHITE PICKET PRISONS,

Kelli Owen is one of a number of authors who is under recognized for her talent. This book could have easily become a copy of a number of stories that orbit this premise, but Owen very quickly establishes that she is no one’s imitator. It has a great crime fiction feel and a marvelous horror sensibility. I was glad to be reading this story the whole time I was in it.

See his blog post for the other nineteen books you should probably be aware of!

Female Coming of Age Books

I was delighted to be included in the article GIRLS GROW UP TOO: 10 FEMALE COMING-OF-AGE HORROR BOOKS over on Nightfire where the article starts with this:

Coming-of-age horror is my favorite. I could list at least a dozen or more books in this genre off the top of my head, books that I adore, but there’s only one issue I have with these beloved books: the protagonists coming-of-age stories are mostly boys.

(We see you, Beverly Marsh! We love you!)

Don’t get me wrong, I love reading about young male protagonists growing up and becoming men. I especially love it when they also have to endure hardships, fight cosmic horror, or capture a serial killer. But I was once a twelve-year-old girl and let me tell you, girls can do all of this and more! So here are my recommendations for coming-of-age horror with female protagonists, because girls rule.

It then goes on to list the 10 books, including my own Wilted Lilies

This is the story of young Lily May Holloway, sitting in an interrogation room, giving testimony as to what happened to her while she was missing for quite some time.

What I love: This is character-driven, supernatural horror at its absolute best. Readers will not be able guard their hearts and will fall helplessly in love with Lily May. Thank goodness this is book one and there is more to follow! (Spoiler: I’ve read book two, Passages, and it’s just as amazing!)

Check out the rest of the article here, and see who else you should be reading in this sub-genre!
