Seeing Shadows

A human being is only breath and shadow.

Beware that you do not lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.

Strange. Now that I live in PA you’d think Punxsutawney Phil would be mentioned more, or at least, oh I don’t know, mentioned. But I haven’t heard anything about him in the last few days. Today’s his big day, but his marketing kind of sucks this year. Perhaps it’s because there’s no snow. Maybe because it was 60 degrees yesterday. Could it be that Phil is only important when people need him to tell them the cold and snow and ice are almost done? Is he only necessary when they’re clinging to hope? Winter hasn’t even truly begun and we’re about to decide how long it will last. Is it even fair to judge the seasons by a naturally timid creature’s fear of its own shadow?

Is it fair to judge anything by its shadow?

As I sit here in the dark office (and again, thank you Met-ed for the “scheduled outage” during #taxseason) there are no shadows. There is no light to cast them. Only darkness.

And even my battery backup emergency lights have failed…

Regarding today’s image: Sorry, Phil, your shadow isn’t quite the most famous…
