scares that care

August Convention Appearances

It’s going to be a very busy August, with a quiet lull, followed by a busy October, but we’ll talk about October later. For now, let’s cover August.

Aug 2-4: SCARES THAT CARE. If you’ve never gone and find yourself either local or “local enough” (which is code for, “I could make that a day trip”) you should definitely check it out. Actors, authors, vendors, movie screenings, costume contest, kid friendly activities, a silent auction, and even a 5k—this convention has everything. And the best part? It’s for a charity. An awesome charity.

Rather than giving to “fill in the blank” national charity or specific disease charity where the funds could go toward administration, or postage, or literally anything, STC does one thing with the money they raise—they give it to a specific patient, with a name and a face. Each year they pick three (3) recipients: a sick child, a burn patient, and a woman fighting breast cancer. STC fights these real problems, real monsters, with your help. Plus, it’s a con, so you get to have fun while doing it!! #winwin

Aug 16-18: KILLER CON. No, we don’t collect a bunch of killers. We enjoy extreme horror in all it’s glory. The beauty of this convention is the intimacy. Capped at only 250 attendees, there’s plenty of options to chat with your favorite author.

With readings, panels, signings, books and merchandise galore, oh and a hot wing challenge and gross-out contest which both offer plenty of giggles, you won’t be bored. Free that weekend? Come see us!

Aug 30-Sep 1: CREATURE FEATURE WEEKEND. In its debut year, this con offers the celebrities and authors and vendors, as usual, but also boasts an independent film festival and not just food, but food trucks.

And because of it’s location in haunted Gettysburg, you will also find nightly ghost tours. I’ve heard rumors of ouija boards and seances and other “I saw this movie” events taking place after hours…

Yes, I will have books and swag on my table, including the new release PASSAGES. But I now have nineteen (19) things to offer, and there’s no way to put them all on a table. So only the newest will be coming along. As usual, if there’s something specific you’re looking for, contact me. If I have one, I’ll bring it along with your name on it.

Did you catch those dates? Yes, I’ll be at a convention literally every other weekend this August. How many of them will I see you at?

Signing Off | Buttercup of Doom 2.11

The end of a (short) era. The finale of the Buttercup of Doom podcast was taped live at Scares That Care charity weekend 5 because a bunch of lovely humans donated funds during the Horror Show with Brian Keene telethon and decreed it to be. And so it was.

We performed without a net—no notes, no plan—winging it with whomever showed up. It was a free-for-all Q&A, which included the famous “f*ck, marry, kill” question, pizza toppings, group sing-alongs, many other topics, insanity, giggles, and a reminder of rule number one: Don’t Be A Dick (oh, that should be my campaign slogan: Buttercup 2020)

Many many thanks to those who donated to make it happen, to those who attended the taping, and to those who have listened over the years. Not sure what kept your attention, but I’m humbled to have had it. Thank you, and good-night…

Available FREE (until Sept 1 only!!) on: PEN Project Entertainment Network • iTunes • I♥Radio  •  StitcherAndroidTune-In • Google Play Music • Overcast … and then POOF, gone. Unless you’re a patreon, then you can get access to these and anything new I may record. It’s only a buck. A single lonely dollar. $1.00 in the grand scheme of things. Go on then… be a patreon!

Sponsors: my new novel TEETH (not your mom’s vampires) and my ABCs coloring book for adults, The Atrocious Alphabet with illustrations by Chris Enterline

Buttercup Out | Buttercup of Doom 2.10

This week I go over every remaining idea, note, thought, rant bubble and peeve that I have jotted down over the years to become something it never will… an episode. Then we have some Q&A from the peanut gallery, the final gypsy wisdom, and the information for the last episode ever—to be taped live at Scares That Care weekend convention in August (3.15pm Sunday, 8/5, in the podcast room… prepare your final thoughts and meet me there!) I completely lose my mind a couple times and the swearing is enough that this should be on headphones or with that office door closed (NSFW).

Sponsors: all of you wonderful people who listened, paid for advertising, or otherwise kept this going.

Merchandise (last chance! I imagine these will disappear when the episodes do!): pillowssockstees, tanks, hoodies, coffee mug or stickerbeach towelphone case

Drive-by Updates

…Just buzzing by with a handful of updates.

Sechs Tage (the German version/translation of Six Days)

Beautiful cover art and a wonderful translator to work with, it is sad to report, this book has been pulled from the publisher. It is no longer available through them and will not be in print in German for the foreseeable future (until it and the rest of the library find a new home). I do have a handful that I will be bringing to Scares That Care. This will be your last chance to snag a copy. I only have a couple, so it will be first-come-first-serve. If you are not going to the convention and are interested in one, you can purchase direct from me while supplies last—contact me for details.

Lost Highways: Dark Fictions from the Road anthology, edited by D. Alexander Ward, coming from Crystal Lake Publishing, will include my short story Jim’s Meats. Available through press online as of July 20th, and they will have a table in the dealer’s room at Scares That Care. For more information stalk the Facebook page.

Welcome to the Show anthology, edited by Matt Hayward, coming from Crystal Lake Publishing, includes my short story Open Mic Night. Available from press online as of August 3rd, and they will also have a table at Scares That Care. For more information check out the publisher’s Facebook page.

The next update will include all the details for the upcoming Scares That Care convention weekend, and of course, the recently finished vampire novel.

Cobwebs

Wow, it got dusty in here! Sorry about that. But I’m back… let’s clear the cobwebs.

With the shutting down of the Buttercup of Doom podcast, I shall return to more regular posts on the website. After all, a girl still needs a platform to lament, right?

In the meantime, how about a quick update? (Sure, Kelli!) Hmm, I fear I might have been hanging out with myself for too long, I’m now answering myself when I type. Oh, and then speaking about it in third person. Why does the voiceover sound like me though? I want a better voice actor!  Okay, so I may have gone a bit stir crazy in here by myself. We’ll work that kink out as well. Where were we? Oh yeah… updates:

  • There’s a new facebook group for fans, a better way to have open conversations than some of the other options.
  • I have a short in the upcoming anthology Welcome to the Show, edited by Matt Hayward — very exciting premise and TOC in that one, check it out.
  • yes, I’m writing a vampire novel.
  • yes, I will have something fun and weird for Scares That Care Weekend this year (as well as the vampire novel) and it involves an artist

I think that covers it. Life was a bit tactile for a couple years, and while it changed some things (buh bye Buttercup), others will be returning (like the blog!). I’m here. I’m still me. You can’t get rid of me that easy…

Now, where’s the duster? I’ll clean up a little around here and then I need to get back to those fangs…
