Happy October!!

I would have said Halloween season, but that starts for different people at different times. For me, it's September 1st, when I begin decorating (putting out the graveyard, specifically, as many things have become everyday decorations in my house at this point).

'Tis the season of the horror movie. And while some of us may watch them all year long, even we kick it up a notch this time of year. Last year, I watched the following "new to me" movies during September/October.

Halloween Viewing

I loved some of these much more than others, but would highly suggest them to be worthy of viewing if you haven't seen them. (The one I liked the least, I believe is most people's favorite among these! To each their own.)

Horror movies in the theater were a huge part of my youth. The first horror movie I saw on the big screen was Halloween 2 (having watched Halloween on television that year and then begging my mother to bring "the girls" to the movies). I saw Ghost Story that same winter. I had certain friends who would gleefully go to the theater whenever something new came out. And when my brothers were older, it became a thing for us, and I would actually travel an hour back to the hometown just to go with them. We enjoyed many that way, but I will always remember Wrong Turn for the screaming audience (fantastic!).

I realized the other day, either I don't go to the theater as much or the horror movies are going straight to small screen (streaming) more often nowadays, because I can count on one hand those I've had with theater popcorn in the last few years. Do you find yourself watching more horror on the small screen lately?

And then I think about the impact the screen size may have, or the audience reactions. In general, I would say of all genres, action probably has the best argument for big screen, with the crescendo soundtrack and explosions. But there's been instances of horror where I felt it could have benefited from the big screen, or that I was glad I'd seen it that way. I recall the Darkness Falls back in the day and how great it was that when she was chasing the car, the sounds of the Tooth Fairy were only in the rear speakers of the theater, so it felt like she was truly behind you. The people behind the old seat-vibrating-gimmick of the 50's classic The Tingler would have been proud of the speaker trick.

I do not have a formal list of October horror movies to view this year... yet. But I am absolutely taking suggestions! If there's something in the last ten years that you feel gets missed or often overlooked, let me know! In the meantime, I'll look over my Letterboxd watchlist and see what we come up with.
