I originally had only “garden” in the subtitle, knowing it would ramble and wander, but my inner DJ quickly changed it to Empty Garden as I started singing the song in my head. It’s always been one of my favorite Elton John songs—right up there with Tiny Dancer, and now I need to call Coop. But I digress…

Good-bye Grass
Absolutely not sung to the tune of Good-Bye Yellow Brick Road, but now I have a whole Elton John concert in my head. Back to the grass, or lack thereof. Since it has come up a several times in group settings and so many have asked about it, here’s the skinny on my replacing my lawn with clover. ☘️

Last year, I saw a video about that stated a clover lawn was both better for the bees and meant less mowing—I hate mowing—but also, it is resistant to wear and tear caused by dogs. So I left whatever social media platform I had seen that on (probably TikTok) and went on a deep dive into the Google underbelly of factual information vs sales pitches and opinions, and I quickly found it was a real thing. With real results. After perusing many descriptions and reviews, I settled on a combination of white dutch and white miniclover (I am not sponsored by any of these brands, but these are affiliate links). And then I got some crimson clover to randomly scatter for fun. Because, crimson clover? How could I not?

And when those little red flowers pop across the yard, I’ll smile and remember seeing Joan Jet sing Crimson and Clover live at last year’s Stadium Tour (and yes, she is still amazing). I’ll relive the amazing experience of having backstage access to Motley Crue—to meet them and let them know how much this meant (I’ve been trying to see their concert for decades and honestly thought my chances had come and gone). It was amazing to bring my daughter and share this with her, within spitting distance of Nikki Sixx during the show, screaming every word of every song and having him make direct eye contact made the kid’s whole night. And just like that, the songstress in my head went from Elton John’s Empty Garden to Joan Jet’s Crimson and Clover and landed firmly, without hesitation or shame, on Motley Crue’s Live Wire, and I have to go rewatch The Dirt.

And how will I go from all of that to an interview I did? Easy, he asked the following question which made me think of mowing all the lawns in the neighborhood as a kid to go buy my first album, Aerosmith’s Toys in the Attic. And then he asked about Kryptonite (not the song by 3 Doors Down, but now that is in my head). So while we’re out of the backyard, we’re still in the music store. What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?
My first subscription to Writer’s Digest back in 1989. This was pre-internet. I lived in the Midwest and had no author friends or mentors nearby to guide me. This magazine opened my eyes and my world. It gave birth to a homemade recipe box filled with index cards of publications I would eventually submit to and helped me find so many other tools in the times before we carried the world in our pocket.
