Dracula Beyond Stoker: Renfield

Not only is my short story “Life Eater” available in issue 2: Renfield of DBS Press’s Dracula Beyond Stoker series, I did an author spotlight interview. Since they posted it to Twitter (now X) and many don’t have or use that platform, I’m posting it here for you.

Dracula is dead and Renfield is on the hunt for a new master in “Life Eater

DBS- How and when did you first experience Dracula?

KO– It was Nosferatu and I remember the day well. I found Frankenstein in kindergarten and begged Mom to check Dracula out at the library. It was rented so we got Nosferatu. I remember my sister’s closed eyes as she battled sleep in the silence of it, claiming “I’m listening!” We still laugh about that.

DBS- Besides Dracula what is your favorite vampire story?

KO– I loved the Anne Rice vampires when they came out, with a special fondness for The Queen of the Damned because of the unique history. I’m a sucker for an origin story, especially a monster, creature, or cryptid.

DBS- What is your favorite vampire movie?

KO– That’s a tough call. My non-Dracula vampire favorite would rotate depending on my mood (comedy, gore, drama) between The Lost Boys, 30 Days of Night, and Only Lovers Left Alive.

DBS- What is your favorite screen portrayal of Renfield?

KO– It’s got to be the OG Dwight Frye. He did such a magnificent job, every other Renfield has been compared to it, even more so than the various Draculas.

DBS- What are you currently reading?

KO– I am almost finished with Devil’s Creek by @todd_keisling . It’s been re-released, and for any who missed it, it’s worth grabbing.

DBS- Are you working on anything you can talk about at the moment?

KO– The third novella in the Wilted Lily series and a coming-of-age retro horror novel set in the 80s. I’m not sure which you’ll see first, due to publisher/agent schedules.

Again, thanks to DBS Press for the spotlight interview and including “Life Eater” in the anthology.

Grab your copy of Dracula Beyond Stoker Issue 2: Renfield. And as always, if you have further or follow-up questions or comments, feel free to post them below.
